As someone going into this with low expectations or was never planning on making this a priority watch, this film surprised me.

The movie follows a group of adventurers as they set on a mission to save a town and reunite with Edgin's daughter. The story takes them on many subplots, many battles and many locations which all make this an enjoyable watch. It does heavily lean into the comedy aspect sadly which will be mentioned later on in the review.

I adored the adventure we embarked on as it's been a while since I have seen a proper quest/adventure storyline that is at the forefront of the entire film. The world we explore is vast, gorgeous looking & truly feels like something out of a fantasy board game. From the ice, fields and graveyards, the world is vast and I am hoping we get to see more of it with its citizens. The people we come across are all different and the movie does an exceptional job of delving into the lore of the many characters. Mostly every place/person we came across got a backstory which to me is the biggest standout of the film. It's clearly a world that I am hoping we get to see more of in another instalment.

I loved the story the film followed which is due to a packed script. It felt like a film that had many side quests to follow as they tried to achieve their overall mission. This gave me the impression of a game, as the cast come across different problems or encounters along their path which made this film unpredictable on where it was going. It leads to a running time that flew by as it is such a fast-paced story, it never once takes a moment to breathe before we encounter another issue or embark somewhere else.

Let's mention the top-notch casting, although their performances are far from incredible it's obvious they immersed themself in their unique characters and had fun with it. There are not any moments where the acting truly shined as most of the film is light-hearted and the film does not allow any sort of breathing room to bring in incredible performances. The way I mentioned the acting sum up the entire film, it's not doing anything spectacular but sometimes you need this type of film to unwind too and let it entertain you and this film certainly ticks these boxes.

My issues are pretty small but they did hinder my watching experience. When it came to the action sequences, they were incredibly hard to follow what is going on. I love the action sequences that are fast-paced and well-choreographed but in this film at certain moments it was too much to take in leaving me never fully embracing the action sequences. Another issue with the film was the comedy aspects, it resulted in many chuckles but for the most part, it wasn’t landing. It’s the type of goofy humour that got laughs me because of how silly they are and not the jokes themselves.

I will also state that I was not fully embracing the storyline. The main appeal of the film is the positives mentioned above while the story was intriguing, I was not gripped with anticipation on what was going to happen next. This could be due to the film taking a more lighthearted route but I’m not stating the story/screenplay is terrible (it's far from that). Compared to other films I've watched my mind should never wonder. As stated multiple times in this review, it's a film to switch off and unwind to.

To conclude, Dungeons & Dragons is worth checking out. A film that I had so much fun uncovering the world and watching the quest to get his daughter back. Is the film aiming to be a masterpiece of originality, no, but it does not need to be as what we have is an entertaining flick.
